Abstract A multiwavelength transmissometer potentially capable of making near-real-time measurements of particulate mass concentration in industrial stacks was developed. A computer program is employed to interpret the transmissometer data and translate the results into mass concentration. The transmissometer uses four different wavelengths and records the opacity of the particulate emissions at each wavelength. Since the response at each wavelength depends on the size of the particles, the relative values of opacity provide the computer with information on particle sizes. If the computer is also given the wavelength dependence of the optical indices of refraction and guidelines as to the most probable distribution forms, the computer can adjust the mean and spread of the distribution to find a best fit to the experimental data. It then uses this information to compute the mass concentration. The theory behind the measurement technique, a laboratory demonstration of the technique, and the optical and electrical design of the instrument are discussed.
