Abstract The methodology that was developed at the Franklin Institute Research Laboratories (FIRL) under the EPA Contract No. 68-02-0544, for the determination of airborne asbestos has been perfected and developed further. Moreover, the newly perfected technique has been applied to point source, near point source and ambient air samples. This report describes the analytical method which employs a scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive x-ray analysis for the identification and counting of airborne asbestos. The specimens, prepared in a unique manner, are suitable for image analysis and for a possible automated counting system. Results of the analysis on airborne asbestos are presented, and limitations and advantages of the present techniques are discussed.
