| Abstract |
Scientists from ten countries presented papers at the Fifth International Symposium on Fish Physiology, Toxicology, and Water Quality, which was held on the campus of the City University of Hong Kong on November 10-13, 1998. These Proceedings include 23 papers presented in sessions convened over 4 days. Papers addressed effects of metals on the physiology of fishes and aquatic invertebrates, effects of ammonia on fishes, effects on fishes of toxicants from oil shale and coal gasification effluents, thermal effects on fishes, effects of pollutants on reproduction of fishes, bioaccumulation and physiological effects on fishes of xenobiotics, and the use of semi-permeable membrane devices to monitor xenobiotics. Water quality papers included discussions on hypoxia, metal ecotoxicology, metals on sediments, methodologies to evaluate the health of riparian and wetland environments, risk management of metal pollution, remedial strategies to reduce impacts on a watershed of metal mine wastes, watershed modelling, and strategies for developing nutrient and sediment load allocations for water quality protection. |
