Abstract In 1987, a cooperative study was made to examine the effects of acidification to various ecosystem parameters. Ammonium sulfate fertilizer was applied to a watershed on the Fernow Experimental Forest in the central Appalachians to elevate N and S inputs and induce acidification. Annually, the fertilizer amendments were approximately double ambient N and S loads. The results presented here describe soil leachate chemistry responses to the manipulation.
