Abstract The impact of water and air quality standards, the tremendous quanities of sludges produced, and the expenditure of physical and monetary resources for conventional methods of wastewater treatment have prompted a search for alternative methods. One such alternative method, which utilizes our land resources, is known as Soils Treatment Systems(STS). While not a new technology, its prior use has lacked the in-depth evaluations required to assure that STS's are truly environmentally acceptable. The initial task for this ad-hoc subcommittee was to identify what is known about liquid effluent and sludge application to the land, and what research is needed for successful utilization of land as a soils treatment system from economic, engineering, health, and esthetic points of view. It was felt that the Nation's experts on STS should be contacted to accomplish the above task. This document presents information gathered at the Research Needs Workshop, sponsored by the ad-hoc subcommittee on July 9-13, 1973, in Champaign, Illinois. It will provide a firm foundation from which the ad-hoc subcommittee can work to achieve its objective.
Supplementary Notes Prepared in cooperation with Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges.
