Abstract The report gives results of an evaluation of the efficacy of charcoal for removing odorous organic vapors from extremely low concentrations in air, at ambient conditions. Two systems were studied in detail: acetaldehyde--Pittsburgh PCB charcoal, and ethylmercaptan--Pittsburgh BPL charcoal. Fixed-bed breakthrough data were taken for the acetaldehyde--Pittsburgh PCB charcoal system at an acetaldehyde concentration of 28 ppm. These data were analyzed using a modeling approach that indicated that the rate-controlling step was intraparticle diffusion. Preliminary design calculations based on this work indicate that fixed-bed adsorption with charcoal is a feasible process for the removal of small concentrations of acetaldehyde and ethylmercaptan from polluted air.
