Abstract The white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium has the ability to degrade a wide variety of structurally diverse organic compounds, including a number of environmentally persistent organopollutants. The unique biodegradative abilities of this fungus appears to be dependent upon its lignin-degrading system. The non-specific and partially extracellular nature of this system suggests that it may be useful as a supplementary means to treat organochemical wastes.
