"Portrays a an influential and controversial woman, Marjory Stoneman Douglas. She was born in 1890 in Minnesota and was brought up in Massachusetts. Eventually, she moved to Miami to work for her father, who was the publisher of the Miami Herald. It was in Miami that she undertook the enormous struggle that marked her spot in the Florida Women's Hall of Fame. Douglas' passionate fight to save the Everglades began when she saw the waterways filled in for housing developments. She wrote the landmark book "The Everglades: River of Grass" to increase awareness of the destruction of the Everglades. The book was the first to recognize the vitality and value of this aquatic Florida environment. This documentary uses interviews, archival photographs, and film footage, combined with more current images of the Everglades, to tell the life story of this remarkable woman who crusaded until she was over 100 years old. It also serves as a blueprint for bringing the Everglades back to life"--Library Media Project. |
