Abstract |
The National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (NEJAC) is presenting this report in response to EPA's request for advice and recommendations on meaningful involvement and fair treatment by tribal environmental regulatory programs. The report, prepared by the NEJAC's Indigenous Peoples' Subcommittee (IPS), specifically responds to the EPA's Charge, for advice and recommendations on the following questions: (1) In what ways should EPA assist Tribal governments to provide meaningful public involvement in the development and implementation of federally authorized and/or approved tribal environmental programs. (2) In what ways should EPA assist Tribal governments to provide fair treatment of all stakeholders in the development and implementation of federally authorized and/or approved tribal environmental programs. The NEJAC is the formal federal advisory committee chartered, pursuant to the Federal Advisory Committee Act, to provide advice and recommendations to the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on matters related to environmental justice. The IPS consists of representatives from tribal governments, indigenous grassroots groups, environmental organizations, business and industry, academia, and state government. |
