Abstract new method of determination of trajectories of plumes and jets using measured vertical profiles of tracer concentration is proposed. Model calculations show that this method can reduce significantly the scatter in the data and eliminate the appearance of an artificial final rise of the plumes and jets. This method is used to determine plume rise from experimental data which were obtained in the EPA Meterological Wind Tunnel (MWT). The results of the measurements were nondimensionalized using buoyancy and momentum length scales. The results obtained are compared with data from other laboratory and field measurements. It is shown that plume rise near the source can be represented using the 'one-third' and 'two-third' laws. Farther from the sources, the data are in agreement with the results of measurements in the MWT. Approximate formulae are suggested in order to incorporate these results into mathematical models of pollutant dispersion.
