Abstract A study was conducted to evaluate and develop a method for the identification of sources of oil pollution. The method is based on the comparison of certain stable chemical indices present in unweathered suspect oil pollution sources and the weathered pollution sample. Five different crude oils, two residual fuel oils (a No. 4 and a No. 5 oil) and one distillate fuel oil (a No. 2 oil) were subjected to simulated weathering in the laboratory. Samples were weathered for 10 and 21 days at 55 and 80 F, under high and low salt water washing rates. Weathered' and 'unweathered' oil samples were analyzed by low voltage mass spectroscopy (polynuclear aromatics), high voltage mass spectroscopy (naphthenes), gas chromatograph (n-paraffins), emission spectroscopy (nickel/vanadium), X-ray total sulfur and Kjeldahl total nitrogen techniques.
