Abstract The aim is to provide reliable information regarding the nature, magnitude, and extent of the emissions of nickel in the United States for the year 1968. Background information concerning the basic characteristics of the nickel industry has been assembled and included. Process descriptions are given, but they are brief, and are limited to the areas that are closely related to existing or potential atmospheric losses of the pollutant. Consumption for the year was reported to be 159,306 tons and domestic production to be 29,215 tons including the production from both primary and secondary sources. Imports, mostly from Canada, totaled 147,950 short tons. Emissions to the atmosphere during the year were 6,475 short tons. About 83 percent of the emissions were due to the burning of heavy fuel oil and coal. Estimates of emissions for mining, metallurgical processing, and reprocessing operations are based on data obtained by personal contact with processing and reprocessing companies, and are considered to be reasonably accurate.
