Abstract Water distribution systems are hyper complex structures, distinguished by extreme pressure gradients, spatial extensiveness, and other physical-hydrological variables. Monitoring and/or predicting the fate and transport of introduced contaminants in water distribution systems is therefore a challenging proposition, involving the identification and operationalization of numerous hydrological and water quality-related factors. The availability of a water distribution system model for emergency response and/or security purposes would allow water utilities to identify, monitor, and track contaminants in their water distribution system and to react more quickly to a terrorism incident.
