Abstract The publication compiles the proceedings of the Workshop on Alternatives for Cadmium Electroplating in Metal Finishing held October 4-6, 1977 which was jointly sponsored by seven Federal agencies. The workshop was prompted by the concerns of government agencies for the potential environmental damage resulting from current cadmium electroplating practices and the high rate of government use of electrodeposited cadmium. The workshop examined techniques and alternatives to minimize the environmental losses of cadmium from electroplating by (a) applying cadmium by mechanisms that reduce the loss of cadmium during plating and (b) developing suitable and cost-effective alternative materials, methods, and coatings. The workshop included presentations on the Federal and industrial concerns for the commercial significance, environmental effects, and health effects of cadmium. Panel discussions reviewed the topics 'Are specifications and standards barriers to change' and 'How essential is electrodeposited cadmium'.
