Abstract This report is intended to provide the electroplating industry with a summary of the laws and EPA regulatory activities, and of regulations and technologies that can affect electroplaters' decisions for wastewater pollution control and solid waste handling and disposal. The regulations promulgated by EPA are presented and water pollution control technologies and case histories of installations are discussed. Processes are described only to provide some guidance for selecting pollution control systems. The report also includes information on the status of sludge disposal regulations, technologies and operating techniques that can reduce sludge disposal costs, and financial assistance available through federally sponsored programs. For industries discharging wastewater to waterways (direct dischargers), the most far-reaching feature of the 1972 FWPCA amendments was the requirement that all such industries install a base level of pollution control technology by July 1, 1977, and a more stringent level by July 1, 1983 (later amended to 1984). The base level was called Best Practicable Control Technology Currently Available (BPCTCA), or simply BPT. The more stringent level was termed the Best Available Technology Economically Achievable (BATEA), and is usually referred to as BAT. In addition, special standards known as New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) were to be established for new plants.
