Abstract The report presents an analysis of material received by the Environmental Protection Agency in response to a request for information on the health and environmental effects of the operation of extra-high-voltage (EHV) transmission lines which was published in the Federal Register in March 1975. The health and environmental aspects of EHV transmission naturally divides into two broad areas. The first comprises concern over the possible effects caused by the electric and magnetic fields in the vicinity of the line. The second area of concern is with regard to effects caused by electrical discharges from the line. The report concludes that available information provides a good knowledge base on the various physical phenomena that result from the transmission of electrical power by EHV lines. It is reasonably well established that the normal environment produced by such transmission lines does not produce any significant health or environmental risks. However, there appear to be areas where additional research is yet required.
