The proceedings contain a summary of the information exchanged at the 1998 State of the Lakes Ecosystems Conference. Reactions and comments from participants have been summarized, and contributions from keynote speakers have been captured. The intent is to provide the reader an opportunity to evaluate and discuss the ideas presented at the conference. The conferences are intended to report on the state of the Great Lakes ecosystem and the major factors impacting it, and to provide a forum for exchange of this information amongst Great Lakes decision-makers. These conferences are not intended to discuss the status of programs needed for protection and restoration of the Great Lakes basin, but do evaluate the effectiveness of these programs through analysis of the state of the ecosystem. Another goal of the conferences is to provide information to people in all levels of the government, corporate, and not-for-profit sectors who make decisions that affect the lakes. |
