Abstract The research reported here focuses on the application of a site-generic hybrid compartmental model to the multimedia distribution of Benzo(a)Pyrene under conditions typical of the middle portion of the Neuse River Basin of North Carolina. This initial application examines the pseudo-steady state distribution of chemicals in air, soil, water, suspended solid and sediment media and suggests how information regarding expected magnitude and uncertainty of chemical concentrations might be used in a methods development setting. Critical information needed for future methods and model development include knowledge of the organic carbon content of the suspended solids compartment, 'typical' as well as time varying patterns of riverbed sedimentation/resuspension, and estimates of the amount of B(a)P entering the Middle Neuse River from upsutream (far-field sources).
