Abstract |
The 33-acre Rasmussen's Dump site is a former industrial and domestic waste disposal area in Green Oak Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Area residents rely solely on the aquifer underlying the site for their drinking water supply. The site is adjacent to the Spiegelberg Landfill, another Superfund site. In 1981, the State detected low levels of ground water contamination onsite. The contamination includes: two onsite contaminated ground water plumes and four areas of soil contamination. The Record of Decision (ROD) provides a final remedy for onsite contaminated soil and ground water. The primary contaminants of concern are VOCs including benzene, TCE, toluene, and xylenes; other organics including ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and phenols; and metals including cadmium, and lead. The selected remedial action for the site includes capping the waste in the areas, and removing and disposing of waste drums unearthed during cap construction offsite at a RCRA facility; and ground water pumping and treatment using chemical precipitation followed by pH adjustment to remove metal contaminants. |
