Abstract The Olean Well Field is located in the eastern portion of the City of Olean, and also encompasses part of the Town of Olean, in Cattaraugus County, New York. Early in 1981, the three municipal wells (Well numbers: 18M, 37M and 38M) at the site were found to contain levels of trichloroethylene (TCE) at concentrations above the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Drinking Water Guidelines (50 ppb). These wells were closed and an old surface water filtration plant was reactivated to provide water to city residents. Private wells in the area were subsequently tested and many were found to be contaminated. Approximately one half of the contaminated private wells have shown TCE levels of over 1,000 ppb. The highest level of TCE detected in a private well was 3,100 ppb (sample taken June 1985). The selected remedial action for this site is included.
