Abstract The 11-acre C and R Battery site is a former battery-sawing and shredding facility in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Open fields and woods border the site on the north, south, and west, a small fuel oil distributor borders the site on the east, and the James River is approximately 650 feet north of the site. From the early 1970s to 1985 the facility was used to recycle discarded batteries. Site operations included draining battery acids into onsite ponds, recovering and stockpiling lead and lead compounds from the batteries, and shredding and stockpiling battery casings onsite. The State began monitoring the site in the late 1970s and detected elevated lead levels in the soil, surface water, and ground water. The selected remedial action for this site includes the demolition of a concrete pad and dismantlement of a storage shed followed by offsite disposal of the debris, and offsite treatment, if necessary, of surface water from the drainage ditch prior to the excavation of contaminated soil and sediment.
