Abstract The 26-acre Shaw Avenue Dump site is a chemical waste site in Charles City, Floyd County, Iowa. Land use in the area is predominantly residential. From 1899 to 1964, Charles City used the site as a municipal landfill for waste incineration, and disposal of liming sludge from the city's publicly owned treatment works (POTW) and asphaltic materials continue to be disposed of in the landfill. Between 1977 and 1981, the State issued reports based on studies of the site and surface water that documented elevated levels of metals in an abandoned gravel pit near the site. The Record of Decision (ROD) addresses the chemical fill and surrounding contaminated soil, and the underground gasoline tank as Operable Unit 1 (OU1). A future ROD will address contaminated ground water as OU2. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil and debris are VOCs including benzene, toluene, and xylenes; other organics including PAHs; metals including arsenic and lead; and other inorganics. The selected remedial action for the site is included.
