Abstract The 850-acre Groveland Wells site is a municipal well field in Groveland, Massachusetts. The site is underlain by a surfical unconsolidated aquifer, which is a source of ground water for the well field, and a deeper bedrock aquifer. In 1979, elevated levels of TCE were discovered in the onsite water supply wells, resulting in the closure of the wells, development of alternate water supplies, and investigations by EPA. EPA investigations identifed three likely sources of contamination: the A.W. Chesterton Company, currently being remediated under RCRA corrective action and closure activities; the Haverhill Municipal Landfill, which has been addressed as a separate CERCLA action; and the Valley Manufactured Products Company (Valley), a screw machine products manufacturer and finisher. The ROD addresses management of migration of contamination in the surfical and bedrock aquifers extending from the valley site, as a final remedy. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water are VOCs including benzene, PCE, TCE, and toluene; and metals including arsenic, chromium, and lead. The selected remedial action for the site is included.
