Abstract The objective of this report is to present a state of the arts summary concerning estimating water quality associated benefits. The summary is viewed as a useful administrative tool to those that have been assigned the task of directing current and future research activity. The summary is presented by specific pollutants by beneficial use, devoting special attention to hypothesized and documented use-quality relationships. A discussion of the economic quantification of these relationships is also included. The beneficial uses considered include recreation, esthetics, property values and ecology with only limited attention devoted to water quality associated health and production impacts. Specific references and methodologies are discussed with the ultimate objective of providing a state of the arts assessment by beneficial use. The assessment was also useful in deriving conclusions concerning research priorities and possible results of future water quality related research.
