Abstract Due to the occurrence of tire slip on a Clayton twin roll dynamometer, there is a difference between the velocities of the front and rear rolls of the dynamometer. This slip can be modeled by the method described in the following report. The results of this theoretically modeling show that, over the LA-4 and the HWFET driving schedules the velocity of the rear roll (which is currently used to determine the vehicle speed) exceeds the velocity of the front roll (which determines the power absorbed) by an average of approximately 1%. From this difference in velocities of the two rolls, a computation of the total energy effect, over transient driving cycles, can be obtained. Approximately a 2% to 5% increase in total energy dissipated over the city (LA-4) or highway driving schedules is predicted from the use of the front roll velocity to determine the vehicle speed, as compared to the currently used velocity of the rear roll.
