Abstract A thorough soil characterization of a contaminated terrestrial system is essential to the development of an accurate assessment of the extent of problems associated with the specific contamination as well as identification and implementation of remedial actions. Characterization efforts will define potential means and routes of exposure to human populations and the environment in order to develop appropriate site modification and management procedures for protection of public health and the environment. The goal of an effective soil characterization process is the identification and measurement of specific soil factors that affect the behavior and fate of specific waste constituents at a specific contaminate site so that an effective remedial action can be developed.
