Abstract The overall study objective was to make an independent assessment of the forced aeration wastewater sludge composting method as practiced at Beltsville, Maryland and Bangor, Maine. A number of visits were made to both sites to observe operations under all weather conditions and to gather data. Results of the study indicate that forced aeration sludge composting can be carried out in a satisfactory manner under nearly all weather conditions including severe New England winters. A number of problems and potential problems are identified along with possible solutions. Costs are very dependent on the size of the operation and the methods used.
