Abstract Of the more than 6,000 active municipal solid waste landfills in the United States (U.S.), there are 114 landfill gas (LFG) to energy projects. The paper describes the different options for LFG to energy projects and provides statistics on the U.S. LFG industry. The paper also provides an overview of the benefits associated with LFG utilization and identifies some of the current barriers in the U.S. that affect LFG utilization. The support for the research is from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Global Climate Change Program on emissions and mitigation from landfills and other waste management facilities that produce greenhouse gases. EPA's Air and Energy Engineering Research Laboratory (AEERL) has responsibility for EPA's research on emissions and mitigation for the major sources contributing to global climate change.
