| Abstract |
The 16-acre Springfield Township Dump site is in Davisburg, Springfield Township, Michigan. The site is comprised of an open field area surrounded by dense woods. Surrounding land use is mixed agricultural and residential. The site overlies both a shallow and deep aquifer, and there are several wetlands adjacent to the site. Unknown quantities of industrial waste were drained into onsite excavated pits in a central disposal area or deposited on low ground areas. Random dumping of refuse occurred onsite, and many drums containing liquid wastes were seen scattered throughout the woods. In 1978, the State identified PCBs, paint sludge, solvents, oils, and greases in 1,500 onsite drums. From 1979 to 1980, 711 tons of contaminated soil were excavated and removed from several onsite areas including the centrally located disposal pits. The Record of Decision (ROD) addresses remediation of onsite contaminated soil and ground water and will be a final remedy for the site. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil and ground water are VOCs including TCE and toluene; other organics including PCBs; and metals including arsenic, chromium, and lead. |
