Abstract In studying the effects of anticholinesterase compounds, the blood has been considered primarily as an index of exposure; however, there are reports in the literature which suggest that anticholinesterase compounds may have an effect on the erythrocyte itself. This study was undertaken to measure the metabolic O2 uptake of rabbit erythrocytes and the rate of erythrocyte removal from general circulation after exposure to paraoxon. There was no apparent acceleration of removal rate of the paraoxon treated erythrocyte in the general circulation. These results suggested that paraoxon acted on -SH groups in blocking O2 uptake.
