Abstract This document presents the EPAs regionally-based nutrient and sediment enrichment criteria expressed as dissolved oxygen, water clarity and chlorophyll a criteria, applicable to the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries. EPA is issuing this guidance pursuant to Section 117(b) of the Clean Water Act and in accordance with the water quality standards regulations (40 CFR Part 131). This Regional Criteria Guidance provides EPAs recommendations to the Chesapeake Bay states for use in establishing their water quality standards consistent with Section 303(c) of the Clean Water Act. Under Section 303(c), states and authorized tribes have the primary responsibility for adopting water quality standards as state or tribal law or regulation.
