Abstract This report is a compilation of the papers presented at the EPA sponsored international conference held in Karlsruhe, Federal Republic of Germany, in September 1978. It discusses the problem of controlling health hazardous organo-chloro compounds resulting form traditional chlorination of drinking water and the oxidation techniques that can potentially remedy that problem. These include (1) changing or eliminating points of chlorination in conjunction with modification of other treatment processes, (2) ozonation for different durations and conditions at different points of conventional treatment, (3) biological oxidation in slow filter media (e.g., sand, activated carbon) and within the ground (riverbank filtration) and (4) use of chlorine dioxide, ultraviolet light and hydrogen peroxide, and potassium permanganate. These other oxidants, however, may introduce other chemicals of currently unknown health risk. Removal of other contaminants (e.g., bacteria, virus, ammonia, iron, manganese, trace metals) are also discussed.
