Abstract Laboratory and engineering studies were conducted to determine the design criteria and cost estimated of providing and operating devices to protect against radiological, biological and chemical warfare agents that may contaminate shore based Naval water supplies. Small disposable columns of mixed cation-anion exchange resins will remove the soluble radionuclides enough to suffice for immediate drinking and culinary purposes. Chemical warfare agents are so numerous and varied that it is not feasible to provide a single protective device to cope with them. Chlorination with free available chlorine residuals of 1 mg liter will handle most biological warfare agents.
