Abstract This report presents recommendations from the National Drinking Water Advisory Council (NDWAC) to the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The report was prepared by the NDWAC's Work Group on the Contaminant Candidate List (CCL) Classification Process. The Work Group prepared the report for consideration by the NDWAC. After the deliberations, the Council unanimously approved and adopted the NDWAC Work Group's report on the CCL Classification Process with one minor clarification. The Charge to the CCL Work Group was to evaluate recommendations made by the National Academy of Science's National Research Council, including methodologies, activities and analysis, and to make recommendations for an expanded approach to the CCL listing process for the purpose of protecting public health. The Work Group's deliberations and recommendations focused on the overall implementation strategy and methodology that EPA should use to develop the CCL. In developing this report the Work Group developed recommendations on a phased adaptive management approach, identified methods to select and validate new classification approaches, and provided a framework for obtaining input from experts and stakeholders.
