Abstract The report gives results of an investigation of the collection of charged submicron particles, through a sequence of interrelated experiments and theoretical models: by oppositely charged supermicron drops; by bicharged drops; and by drops charged to the same polarity as the particles. It provides experimentally verified laws of collection for a system with different effective drop and gas residence times. The report shows, experimentally and through theoretical models, that all three of the above configurations have the same collection characteristics. Charging of the drops in any of these cases: results in dramatically improved efficiency, compared to inertial scrubbers; and approaches the efficiency of high-efficiency electrostatic precipitators. Charged-drop scrubbers and precipitators have the operating cost capital investment profiles of wet scrubbers, and submicron particle removal efficiencies approaching those of high-efficiency electrostatic precipitators.
