Abstract The report summarizes the results of sampling ambient air for selected carbonyl containing compounds in 12 urban centers in the contiguous United States as part of the Urban Air Toxics Monitoring Program (UATMP). Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acetone concentrations were measured using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH)-coated silica cartridges to collect the carbonyls for subsequent analysis. Sampling and analysis followed guidance provided in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compendium method TO-11. Formaldehyde concentrations ranged from 0.42 to 34.5 ppbv with an average concentration for all sites of 4.2 ppbv. Site average formaldehyde concentrations ranged from 1.5 ppbv for Houston, TX (H1TX) to 7.9 for Washington, DC (W2DC). Acetaldehyde concentrations ranged from 0.37 to 9.5 ppbv, averaging 1.7 ppbv over all 1990 UATMP sites. Site average acetaldehyde concentrations ranged from 0.76 ppbv at Houston, TX (H1TX) to 2.5 ppbv at Baton Rouge, LA (BRLA). Acetone concentrations ranged from 0.37 to 10.8 ppbv and averaged 1.8 ppbv over all sites. Site average acetone concentrations ranged from 0.68 ppbv at Houston, TX (H1TX) to 2.9 ppbv at Chicago, IL (C4IL).
