Abstract |
This report summarizes the required physical and electrical properties of liquids used as dielectric and cooling fluids in transformers, electromagnets, electric motors, and capacitors. Prior to 1977, PCBs were widely used in all of these applications and provided excellent fire safety. The use of PCBs was banned by the Toxic Substances Control Act. The new materials that were developed as substitutes for PCBs in these applications are discussed in light of the required properties and the performance trade-offs that resulted from their use. |
