Abstract The economic and technical feasibility were studied of the adaptation of the CO2 Acceptor Process to the problem of producing low-sulfur, low-Btu power plant fuel by the gasification of bituminous coals. Combustion of fuel gas makes possible a drastic reduction in NO(x) emissions. Atmospheric versus pressure operation of the gasifier were compared for the objective of preparing low-sulfur boiler fuel gas for an existing boiler. Capital and operating costs were estimated for two conceptual variations of the CO2 Acceptor Process. Pretreatment studies were also conducted. The main reactor was used initially to study continuous preoxidation. Two coals were used which represent the extremes in caking properties. The experimental gasifier was operated at conditions simulating the full range of conditions in an envisioned full-scale unit. A limited amount of data were obtained from the gasification tests and in the demonstration run on the question of gasification kinetics. The sulfur recovery is also thoroughly discussed.
Highlights Notes Studies various coal gasification and SO2 removal processes, based on the high temperature oxidation of fluidized coal and the Claus process.
