Abstract This pilot study was conducted as a prelude to a nation wide survey of organic emissions from major stationary combustion sources, The primary objectives of the pilot study were to obtain data on the variability of organic emissions from two such sources and to evaluate the sampling and analysis methods. These data are used to construct the survey design for the nationwide survey. The compounds of interest are polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and chlorinated aromatic compounds, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and polychlorinated di-benzofurans (PCDFs). Of particular interest is 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). In addition total cadmium was also determined in special samples from both plants to meet special Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) needs. A summary of the results of this study is contained in Section 2 of this report. Section 3 presents recommendations for future work. Brief descriptions of the two combustion sources are contained in Section 4. The sampling and analysis methods are described in Sections 5 and 6. Sections 7 and 8 present the field test data and analytical results. The analytical quality assurance results are summarized in Section 9. Section 10 presents the emissions results and Section 11 is a statistical summary of the emissions results.
