Abstract EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) has actively participated in the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) to develop innovative technologies and processes for the reduction of environmental pollution. Technology developments from two of the more noteworthy projects conducted by the NRMRL for SERDP are currently in general use by military and commercial facilities. The specific technologies include an innovative paint spray booth design and the large scale use of n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a paint stripping and surface cleaning agent. These engineering development and demonstration programs have led to significant cost and pollutant discharge reductions from the applicable facilities. This paper describes the effectiveness of these processes and estimates the resulting cost and pollution reductions achieved.
