Abstract The means and ranges of the 96-hour LC50's derived from three tests were 0.55 (0.37 to 0.76) and 2.5 (1.9 to 3.0) mg Zn/liter for rainbow and 2.0 (1.6 to 2.4) and 6.0 (5.0 to 7.0) mg Zn/liter for brook trout in soft and hard water, respectively. Based on overall means, brook trout were approximately 2.7 times more resistant than rainbow trout. Zinc toxicity to both species increased with increasing pH, and decreased with increasing hardness and alkalinity.
