Abstract While the pilot survey was limited in scope and represented less than five percent of the bottling firms in the U.S., it is evident that there are deficiencies in surveillance, facilities and their operation, and plant quality control. These deficiencies result in the production of bottled water whose quality does not comply with the 1962 U.S. Public Health Service Drinking Water Standards. While the water quality violations are not widespread, they are of sufficient significance to warrant corrective action. The pilot survey of 25 bottling establishments, and bacteriological and chemical examinations of approximately 50 bottled water products are presented
