Contents Notes "Treatment and management of chronic diseases comprise the majority of continually rising health care spending. In response to this health care challenge, researchers have developed hassle-free and battery free wearable sensor technology that can provide patients and doctors with better choices while also enabling rapid and effective treatment. -- To learn more about this exciting new technology, the EPA-RTP Management Council and the Environmental Cutting Edge Speakers Series Committee are pleased to host Dr. Veena Misra on Thursday, February 23, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the EPA Auditorium for her talk titled "Self-Powered Wearable Sensors for Health and Environmental Monitoring." In her presentation, Dr. Misra will demonstrate how recent technological advances are being combined together to build self-powered wearable sensor systems, which can enable long-term sensing and effective management of chronic conditions, as well as sensing of personal exposure to air pollutants and toxins. Such sensor systems can empower patients and providers to: manage wellness instead of managing illness, assist in effective treatment of at-risk elderly, reinforce healthy lifestyles, and provide new tools for long-term environmental exposure health studies. -- Dr. Veena Misra is Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST). She is a Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina State University. She has authored or coauthored over 150 papers in the areas of state-of-the-art-low-power CMOS devices, and has recently presented at the TED Raleigh WonderLust event in March 2016." --Cutting Edge Speaker Series webpage.
