Abstract This study evaluated the efficacy of the addition of several food additives at preventing anal leakage following the administration of polydimethylsiloxane fluid, 35 cs. (PDMS). Nineteen groups of 5 male rats were administered 105 g PDMS fluid (7%) either alone (control group) or with the addition of 1, 3, 7, 15, or 30 g MS-75, 15 g titanium oxide, 15 g calcium carbonate, 30 g silica, 15 g polydextrose, 30 g stearic acid, 30 g suet, 30 g Solka Floc (BW-200 FCC or BW-300 FCC), 30 g barley bran, Methocel A4M solid or solution, Methocel K15M solution, or Methocel K4M solution in the diet for 7 days. All animals were observed daily for food consumption, anal leakage, stool consistency, and changes in hair coat. Body weights were recorded prior to study initiation and on days 3 and 7. None of the additives affected food consumption or body weight gain compared to the PDMS controls. MS-75 (30 g), stearic acid, suet, and barley bran prevented anal leakage and fecal changes observed in the other treated groups. All other groups were found to have slight to excessive anal leakage and oily feces at some or all intervals during consumption of the PDMS treated diet.
