Abstract Pesticides are necessary and of unquestioned economic value in agriculture, industry, and disease prevention. Their usage has increased astronomically in the last decade and will likely increase further in the future. Thus, the safe use of pesticudes has become an increasingly important area for public concern. In response to this concern, the Preventive Medicine Section of The Medical University of South Carolina and The State Board of Health organized, in 1967, the South Carolina Community Pesticide Program to study the health effects, if any, of long-term pesticide exposure. The study team, composed of physician, biochemist, and entomologist, shaped in principle a partnership of industry and health professionals.
