| Abstract |
The research results presented in this report were obtained to further the basic understanding of adsorption phenomena related to the interaction of detergent in aqueous systems with polar colloidal solids. This research has been carried out using alumina as a model polar oxide solid together with well-characterized sulfonates as the detergent. The effects of hydrocarbon chain length on sulfonate adsorption have been studied and two distinct adsorption mechanisms delineated. The thermo-dynamics of adsorption have been investigated by measurement of the heat of immersion of alumina into aqueous surfactant solutions and a model for sulfonate adsorption onto a hydrated alumina surface has been presented. Studies delineated conditions under which inorganic electrolytes compete with the adsorption of detergents of oxide-water interfaces. (Modified author abstract) |
