Abstract A southern Appalachian coal was added to the coals slated for comprehensive two-stage beneficiation to further define this method for removing and concentrating pyrite from steam coals. Particular attention was focused on the use of the high-gravity middlings fractions in line with the total steam utilization concept. Eight geographically diverse bituminous coals, used basically for power generation, were collected and subjected to two-stage cleaning studies. The purpose was to determine the suitability of a concentrating table for deep cleaning coals at a topsize of 30 mesh. Sulfur reductions achieved would greatly alleviate the load placed on boilers and stack scrubbers in plants using these coals for power generation.
Highlights Notes Evaluates flotation beneficiation of eight bituminous coals for removing pyrite and therefore alleviating the amount of sulfur oxides produced upon combustion.
