Abstract This report describes the results of a field demonstration conducted at contaminated sites near Butte, Montana, in which developers of soil characterization technologies were invited to participate. The report presents soil sample analysis results from a mobile atomic absorption spectroscopy system operated by Pace Environmental Laboratories. This spectroscopic technique was one of four technologies that were used to analyze soil samples for a number of target elements. Other technologies that were tested include a laser-induced breakdown spectrometer operated by Mel(at)ok, Inc.; a second laser-induced breakdown spectrometer from Los Alamos National Laboratory; and anodic stripping voltammetry systems fielded by Battelle Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The results from these technology demonstrations are published as separate reports.
