Abstract During April and May 1980 scattering and extinction coefficients were measured at St. Louis, Mo. The instruments used were a MRI integrating nephelometer model 1550 belonging to the Center of Air Pollution Impact and Trend Analysis and a multiwavelength telephotometer developed at the Institute for Experimental Physics of the University of Vienna, Austria. The errors arising of the different operating principles of the two types of instruments in a direct comparison of extinction and scattering coefficients are analyzed.
