Abstract This study examines the economic impact of the detection and notification of schools which have areas contaminated with friable asbestos-containing materials. The problem is identified by geographic area and by square footage of asbestos-containing materials per school. Unit costs are examined by region for inspection and analysis of samples by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and optical microscopy. The total impacts of Asbestos Schools Rule No. 1 are also presented and discussed.
